When the ball passes through the lock it won’t change direction because the small grey ball is holding it that way. It won’t change direction until the ball passes through a gear bit that is linked with it.

@Funi2 I love this idea! You have a great explanation. How did you think of it? We have had some people suggest a part where it holds one ball and doesn’t release it until another ball passes through. Your idea is very clever.
